Scholarship Blesses Seminary Student

/files/Images Folder/DrakeSS.jpgFrom the world’s perspective, Judd Drake of Irwinton, Georgia had it all: a loving wife, three healthy children, a well-established law practice and a fabulous dream home. Yet, in spite of his many “successes,” he felt empty inside.

Three years ago the Rev. Drake’s life changed dramatically when he accepted the Lord as his Savior and received a call to ministry. He began studying the Bible, praying, teaching Sunday school and fervently seeking God’s plans for his life.

“My wife and family were growing to the point where we could take the leap of faith and leave the life we had come to know for a much different life,” Drake said.

After practicing law for 13 years, Drake sold his law firm and enrolled at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. In addition to attending seminary, he serves as a part-time student pastor at Irwinton-Toomsboro-Salem United Methodist Charge and works part-time as a State Court of Candler County judge.

Although committed to pursuing his Master of Divinity and an ordination track with The South Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church, Drake admits the transition at times has been a struggle.

“The expenses are significant,” Drake said. He cited tuition, books, health insurance, periodic hotel stays and gas from commuting two-hours each way between Irwinton and Decatur.

To offset expenses, Drake recently applied for a Dollars for Scholars scholarship through the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF). In addition to receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the UMHEF, selected applicants may also be eligible to receive a matching $1,000 scholarship from participating churches, colleges, universities, and organizations. The Georgia United Methodist Foundation has been a long-time participant in this program.

“When I found out I had received matching scholarships from the UMHEF, the Foundation, Emory University, and my church, Irwinton-Toomsboro-Salem, I was shocked,” Drake said. “This scholarship is a tremendous blessing that will take away a lot of financial worry. It’s also an example of how God provides.”
